For Aboriginals Writers: It's in the Kiss, that's where it is

Some principles of writing, the Aboriginal way

1. Writing was designed to be recorded speech. Non Aboriginals seem to have forgotten that and write in ever more complex and less undestandable ways. KISS (Keep it simple....etc.).

  • Simple vocabulary
  • Simple structure (avoid highly punctuated long sentences)
  • Demonstrate your intelligence and knowledge by the content not by the form

2. Aboriginal writing traditionally begins with personal observations or story and truth is drawn from it.
  • Introduce your writing with a story or something from the heart that explains why you are writing. This will attract your readers

3. Complete your personal section with a thesis statement, a statement that explains to the reader what conclusions you are trying to establish

4. Proceed from your thesis with paragraphs that show your reasoning and research to support your thesis

5. Summarize how you proved your thesis statement in the last paragraph.

6. Make sure you credit all your sources. APA and MLA have ways to help you, but failing this make sure you credit people whose ideas you used.
